Outsider art /adivasi
The term outsider art is used globally to characterize work produced by people who do not have formal art training and don’t produce their work within a conventional art world. In India today, a key example of outsider art is Nek Chand’s Rock Garden in Chandigarh. Nek Chand was a low level government inspector and self-taught artist who began to create sculptures from rocks and shards he found. This category is also connected to an extraordinary output of indigenous art. Contemporary indigenous artists -- including some who have found success in mainstream galleries -- transform ritual or traditional art into everyday, individual expression.
