Installation in 1990s India
Installation artworks comprise environments that the viewer often walks through or interacts with to experience fully. In India, installation took on increasing importance from the early 1990s. Artists who had previously worked primarily as painters, including Nalini Malani, Rummana Hussain and Vivan Sundaram, turned to conceptual and installation work at this time -- in part to respond to the changing imperatives of contemporary India, specifically the demolition of the Babri Mosque in Ayodhya and subsequent riots.
