Portraiture

A portrait is an artistic representation of a person. This genre dates at least 5000 years -- as far back as ancient Egypt -- and, for centuries, was expressed in the mediums of painting, drawing, and sculpture. Since the invention of photography and now with new mediums, the possibilities for portraiture have expanded. In India, historically, portraits recorded rulers and deities, showing power and wealth, while today this form may be more democratic, encompassing wide strata of society.
