Nandini Chandavarkarverified

Active since 2018

As an Indian feminist artist, Chandavarkar's ceramic works explore the fragmented nature of the female body, a fragmentation perpetuated by the gaze. Influenced by patriarchal societies that have historically objectified the female form, she draws inspiration from narratives, popular culture, and media. Chandavarkar's pieces respond to the unsolicited comments she has received about her own body, offering insights into the pervasive objectification of women. Through the ceramic medium, she subverts the gaze, commenting on the struggle for bodily autonomy within patriarchal constructs.
Nandini Chandavarkar is an Indian ceramic artist with an MA in Ceramics from Cardiff School of Art and Design in the UK and a degree in Visual Communication from Srishti Institute of Art, Design & Technology, Bangalore.

Chandavarkar was featured among 2023's fresh craft graduates by Craft Council Magazine UK and served as a student demonstrator at the International Ceramics Festival hosted by Aberystwyth Arts Centre in 2023. Her works were shown in A Different View, studioMADE UK, Denbigh (2023); Masters Show (group), Cardiff School of Art & Design, Wales (2023); Domestic Fragilities (group) exhibition, curated by Farah Siddiqui and Natasha Mehta, as part of the Life with Objects event in Mumbai (2022).

“You are so skinny!”

Since I can remember, my body has been a moving target for unsolicited comments.

How can one discern the personal and political through ceramics?
