Koshy Brahmatmaj (b. 1992) (they/she) is a zine/book maker, fibre artist, hairdresser and researcher. Through zine making, drawing and embroidery, their work looks at universal concepts through a personal lens. Their works are tactile in nature, filled with textures wanting to be held and touched. Their current practice is concerned with healing chronic illness and has recurring motifs of human body parts, landscapes and animals combined with techniques of embroidery, painting and drawing.
Brahmatmaj holds a Bachelor’s Degree in 3D Effects for Performance and Fashion from the London College of Fashion, London (2017). Prior to this, they pursued a Foundation in Hairdressing at B:Blunt Hair Salon and Academy, Mumbai (2013) and a Foundation Studies Program in Art and Design at Srishti Manipal Institute of Art, Design and Technology (2012). They co-founded Stale Rumours in 2021, a zine collective based in Mumbai where they serve as a Co-founder and Zine Maker. Brahmatmaj participated in the Arthshila X Khoj Artist Residency at Parivartan, Siwan (2022). The artist has exhibited in various shows including A to Zine, Queercircle, London, (2023); Mumbai Urban Art Festival, Sassoon Dock, Mumbai (2022); Planet of Zines, The Blank Gallery, Tokyo, (2022); Locus of Control, House of Creativity, International Women’s Month exhibition by Creative Debuts, Adidas London, London (2022); Zine Festival – Play, Kānike Studio, Bangalore (2022); Burn All The Books That Call You Unknown, Queer Future Archives at The Riverside Theatres, Sydney, and Futures of Sexuality TIFA Working Studios, Pune (2019).
