Jyoti Naoki Eri (b. 1975) is a multidisciplinary artist who has been residing in Auroville for the past 20 years. Drawing on his unique artistic and cultural background, as well as his profound interest in spirituality and modern science. For Jyoti, time is an essential medium in his artistic expression, regardless of the discipline he engages in. From conceptualization and preparation to the creation process, time is deeply woven into every stage and establishing the right relationship with it is crucial for materialising inspiration and transforming it into artwork. In Jyoti’s paintings, there is no clear boundary between object and background. Drawing inspiration from the tradition of Eastern Landscape paintings, known as San-sui or Shan-sui, nature plays a dominant role within the frame. His artworks reinterpret landscape paintings in a contemporary context, inspired by Advaita Vedanta and Sri Aurobindo’s Philosophy of evolving spiritual materialism. The blurred layers of natural pigments subtly suggest the multi dimensional oneness of the universe in the present moment and transcending the boundaries of time and space. His unique approach seeks to integrate the profound spiritual heritage of the East with the increasingly mystical discoveries of modern Western science. He has used his strong traditional background to break barriers in his art and explore multiple techniques and mediums in his artwork such as; calligraphy, sculpture, water colours, ceramics, lacquer work etc.
He seeks to create visual poetry that bridges the past and the future.
