Hiral Bhagatverified

Active since 2014

Hiral Bhagat (b. 1982) is a distinguished calligrapher and visual artist. She believes that the sense of belonging deepens with distance - an emotional gravity tied not just to land or language, but to identity and memory. She draws inspiration from this sense of displacement and continuity, channeling it into her pioneering work in contemporary Gujarati calligraphy. She reclaims her mother tongue with precision and lyricism, and her brush becomes a bridge between word and world, transforming poetry into visual experience. Rather than illustrating text, she reanimates it - letters unfold like butterfly wings, delicate and deliberate, revealing layered meanings as they dance across the canvas. The Gujarati script, with its flowing, open forms, becomes a medium of both spiritual and artistic expression. Hiral’s practice blends literature, design, and fine art, exploring themes of identity, migration, and memory. Her calligraphy is meditative, meticulous, and deeply personal. Letters swirl like Sufi dervishes, expressing freedom, devotion, and quiet transformation. Her studio becomes a space where repetition reveals truth, and gesture gives rise to meaning. More than an artist's expression, Hiral's work forms a living archive - visual testament to language's power to root, heal, and offer a sense of home. Her script is both sanctuary and statement.
