About the Artist
Bhartti Verma
Bhartti Verma (b. 1987) is inspired by Delhi and its urban landscape. Reflecting on the constant cacophony of a city that rarely takes a pause, Verma often imagines what a silent city would look like. Her paintings depict spaces with objects such as a crown, a daguerreotype camera, or a chair, creating conjunctions in time and space. They are devoid of people, though their presence remains palpable through pertinently placed objects, indicative of the artist’s acute sensitivity to the world around her. While still in her graduate program, Verma’s interest in narrative art crisscrossed a surreal visual language, complicating our notions of the present through signs placed in the urban space. Verma further translates her childhood fascination with aerial views of buildings to create silent urban sanctuaries for herself and viewers to take refuge from the chaos of the world.
