Between skies and bridges: The periphery as a constellation of possible worlds.

Amidst the waters and forests of Recôncavo Baiano, Gabriel Gomes transforms the essence of the periphery into visual worlds where ancestry and the future intertwine in a poetic dance. In his exhibition "Perifuturismos: Possible Worlds – Quando Olho pro Céu Empinando Arraia", the artist invites us to journey through a peripheral vision that transcends time and space. Here, the seemingly ordinary unveils its cosmic depth, and each kite (arraia) soaring into the sky becomes an imaginary constellation, bridging the everyday with the infinite.
Gabriel, raised in the 7 de Setembro community in the far south of São Paulo, channels the rich and profound memory of his territory into his paintings. His works transcend mere representation, offering an invitation to view the periphery not as a limitation but as a unique lens—a way of being and perceiving the world. From the margins, Gabriel redefines aesthetics, transforming marginality into a space of boundless creativity and innovation. His paintings emerge as a distinct language, born in a realm where the boundaries between reality and imagination dissolve, uncovering layers of visual poetry that stand powerful and unapologetically independent of external validation.
When Gabriel relocated to Cachoeira, along the banks of the Paraguaçu River, he discovered a profound wellspring of inspiration. In this region, where time flows with the rhythm of the tides and the beat of drums, he immersed himself in the ancestral waters of the Recôncavo. The pulse of the Boa Morte festivals, the weathered textures of colonial ruins, and the shimmering glow of the Paraguaçu at dusk became his muses. Each bridge crossing to São Félix deepened his connection to the land, weaving its sacred essence into his creative process. Through every line and hue, Gabriel captures the enchantment of this place, reflecting a Brazilian periphery in dialogue with India, Brazil, and the cosmos, merging the earthly with the divine.
The arraias—kites soaring in the sky—emerge as a central motif in Gabriel’s work, symbolizing the perifuturism he champions: the ability to envision the extraordinary within the ordinary of the periphery. In the sky, the kites trace fleeting constellations, ephemeral maps of possible worlds that dance with the wind. They float—light yet resilient—mirroring the stories of the periphery itself. Gabriel’s sky becomes an expansive canvas, welcoming dreams and transforming them into a peripheral cosmos where imagination thrives. Here, the periphery transcends its reductive labels of scarcity or resistance, redefining itself as a site of rupture and creative emergence amid profound challenges. For Gabriel, creating in the periphery is not merely an artistic act but a daily defiance of absences and constraints—a transgressive journey that reshapes geography into an internal, intricate, and boundless landscape. Through this lens, his work invites us to reimagine the periphery as a visionary space of possibility and reinvention.
The state of continuous invention emerges from a "creative trance," a profound surrender to the painting process, where body and soul seem guided by an ancestral resonance in every movement. This trance is not just a connection to the present but a portal to memories and voices embedded in the territory—from childhood on the streets of São Paulo to the waters and narratives of the Recôncavo and the island of Boipeba. It is a ritual of creation where each line and color embodies the intensity and complexity of lived experience, claiming belonging through a unique aesthetic shaped by shared memories. Perifuturismos: Possible Worlds Quando Olho pro Céu Empinando Arraia celebrates the distinctiveness of the outskirts, acknowledging the challenges while honoring their transformative potential. This is not a romanticized view of creating on the margins; rather, it highlights the disruptive power of turning the everyday into art. A gesture as simple as flying a kite becomes an imaginative act, forming constellations and sketching new worlds. Gabriel's series, deeply tied to his daily research, invites us to see the periphery not just as a source of creativity but as a realm of possibilities born from the friction, contrasts, and complexities of life on the margins. In this exhibition, the artist’s constant movement symbolizes more than physical transit; it embodies the connection between diverse realities, where past, present, and future converge into a unified fabric. It is a crossroads where memories and visions intertwine, where simplicity meets complexity, and where the periphery becomes a boundless space for reinvention and creation.
